One million pile into .eu over weekend
Over one million applications have flooded in since the new .eu European domain name opened to the general public on Friday. It took .info - the last major domain name launch - a full year to reach the same level of popularity after it was launched in 2002, analysis from NetNames has revealed.
There are now over 1.3million active .eu domain names of which 420,000 are German, 271,000 are British and 155,000 are Dutch.
"The new European domain name has exceeded all expectations and it could easily become one of the top three most popular domain names within a year," said Jonathan Robinson, Chief Operating Officer, NetNames. "It took .com some years to reach the one million mark and it took the last major domain name launch - .info - over a year to hit a million. The response from the public has been unprecedented and any business which failed to secure its .eu presence before Friday could well find itself being cybersquatted. The next few months are likely to see some very high profile disputes."
There are 85.6 million domain names on the web of which:
- 40 million are .com
- 9 million are .de
- 5.5 million are .net
- 4.5 million are .co.uk
- 3 million are .org
