NetNames now accepting Sunrise applications for the new .eu Top Level Domain
11 June 2005, London
Businesses must act now to secure their European Internet presence as the Sunrise Period for the long awaited .eu Top Level Domain (TLD) finally begins. NetNames, the UK's leading domain name specialist has been appointed as one of the first accredited registrars for .eu, and is urging businesses to beat competitors and cybersquatters across Europe out of the starting blocks and protect their brands and trademarks online. A 'Sunrise Period' is an industry term for a restricted registration period offering an opportunity for qualifying entities to apply for specific domain name registrations in advance of more general release. The .eu Sunrise Period will run in two phases. Phase One will only be available to registered trademark holders and public bodies. Phase Two will be available to holders of 'other Prior Rights', such as unregistered trademarks, company names and family names. The first Sunrise Period is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of this year. However, as an Accredited Registrar, NetNames is now able to accept applications for both phases of the Sunrise Period. In accordance with the Registry's regulations, applications will be submitted in the order that they are received. It is therefore advisable for eligible entities to submit applications as soon as possible to secure a position in the queue Following the Sunrise Period, the Registry will open up to the public on a first-come, first-served basis for all other domain names. NetNames will shortly start accepting pre-registrations for this Open Registration period, which will be announced on www.netnames.com Demand for the new .eu TLD is expected to be high as existing pan-European businesses and firms from the new EU member states act to protect and secure their European credentials by registering .eu. Jonathan Robinson, Business Development Director, NetNames commented, "For some time the market has been eagerly awaiting the .eu domian name. It is finally a reality and we are pleased to be one of the first registrars able to take applications. "Companies need to act quickly to ensure they protect their online brands across Europe. The Sunrise Period gives trademark holders and others with rights to a brand or name, the ability to register ahead of applications being opened to everyone. Given the importance of this new domain name we would urge companies to make applications as early as possible. Applications will be dealt with in the order in which they are received so any delay could mean names being registered elsewhere with the consequent loss of brand value."
